Loblolly Pine, Pinus taeda



Habitat: The Coastal Plain and Piedmont of Virginia. It is very common and does well on sandy (moist or dry) soils.

Characteristics: A very tall tree often attaining 100 feet in height. Mature trees are 2-5 feet in diameter. This species is similar in appearance to Longleaf pine and may be differentiated on needle length. Loblolly needles are 6-9 inches long, whereas Longleaf pine needles are between 9-18 inches long.
