Northern Red Oak, Quercus rubra



Habitat: One of the principal trees of the northern hardwood forests; it prefers dry (xeric) soils.

Characteristics: Trees are typically 70-80 feet tall but may be taller. The trunks of mature trees are 3-4 feet; the leaves are 4-10 inches long and turn red in autumn. Note the bristles on the tips of the leaves which are characteristic for red oaks.
