Habitat: Bogs, pond margins, wet depressions, and streamsides.
This species is restricted to the northern states and reaches its
southernmost distribution in the mountains of West Virginia.
Characteristics: Alders attain a height of 10-15 feet and the
trunk may have a diameter of 1-4 inches. The leaves are 2-5 inches long
and are double-toothed. Note the many white lenticels (speckles) on the
bark.
