Smooth Alder, Alnus serrulata

Habitat: Lake and pond margins, wet depressions, streamsides, and in drainage ditches along roadsides. Smooth alder is ubiquitous throughout Virginia.

Characteristics: Alders attain a height of 6-15 feet and the trunk may have a diameter of 1-4 inches. The leaves are 2-5 inches long and are double-toothed. This species lacks the numerous white speckles that are found on the bark of speckled alder; however, it may have a few white, bar-like markings. The leaves are either single- or double-toothed and wavy.
